Misoula, Montana

All in all, a very beautiful, wonderful, laidback place. I can't claim that much knowledge of the rest of the world or even the United States, but it does have a sense of isolation from both while attempting to commune with all. Although the main things I miss right now are the easy access to great outdoor activities and cheap beer.

Missoula has an interesting dichotomy where one house will have a sign "This house supported by lumber dollars" and the neighboring house might have "This house supported by mother earth."

The alternative news weekly The Independent is offers a fairly good, accurate feel for the area.

The corporate owned Missioulian is a weak newspaper, but they do have a pretty good web site.

University of Montana

My local alma maters

Good ol' University of Montana. Known mainly for its creative writing program, it has a lot of fine professors who are willing to work for comparatively lower income to be in a nice place.

I couldn't find a decent shot on the web of campus I liked so I'm left with the logo.

With a nice website created by one of my old math teachers, Hellgate High School is well-represented on the web.

I just have to include a later alumnus' reaction to the day Ted Nugent came to Hellgate. Dundus' article gives a accurate (and hilarious) description of the school setting.

By the way the school's interesting name comes from the nearby Hellgate Canyon. A narrow opening in the mountains where cold winds will come and, I guess, ambushes occurred.

Here is a beautiful picture that circulated as the fires began to subside I found on the Missoulian site. Click on the image for the screen size version and caption.
