Political Blatherings

Bush is choosing his cabinet. He's even coming out of hiding occasionally so it doesn't appear to be a Chaney administration. I'm looking forward to one of the weakest presidential tenures in our nation's history. Between losing the popular vote, barely capturing Florida in questionable circumstances, and being an mental lightweight Bush will have maybe a year before facing a Democratic Congress.

Some old stuff: a great quote from the beginning of the left column on 28 November 2000's Wall Street Journal page 1, "If Al Gore were running for county sheriff, he might have a good shot at eventually getting his badge." Continuing later: "And legal experts believe the very fact that the presidency is so important - and the situation in the contested counties so complicated - may lead the courts to let stand a clouded presidential election, rather than pursue a result that, while perhaps more accurate, might take weeks or months to sort out."

Keep in mind also the difference between the two major candidates will be less than any of the national small party candidates vote totals. Yup, less than Nader (of course at 97,000 votes) Brown, Buchanan, Phillips, and Hagelin (at 2270). Looking at vote totals Buchanan actually cost Bush more states than Nader cost Gore. Pretty funny.

For a very pragmatic look at the Nader candidacy take a look here.

What's your take on some of the major issues?
Take this nifty quiz to find where your are on the political map (with two axes!) The test takes about 20 minutes.

Heck, here's a religious belief quiz to see how well your beliefs compare to 26 groups of spiritual/religious thought. This one takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Presidential Election

I voted for Ralph Nader and Winona LaDuke for President and VP.

Why? Here's a letter written to a local newspaper and an older position paper.

Let's talk Policy

I'm only going for what I feel to be very clear topics for this initial foray.

  • Missile Defense: How dumb can we get?
  • Drug War: What will it take to change tactics? People have medical problems not merely criminal actions.

Other issues like gay rights have some people mired in moral matters seem pretty obvious. (Equal rights - what is this 'special rights' nonsense? - meaning marriage, adoption, employment rights just like any couple.) For some reason many want to bring morality arguments which require different argumentation tactics.

An example of the intimidation tactics of the LAPD: My friend Anna rode in the critical mass ride in LA during the Democratic National Convention. While initially escorted by the police, 71 of the riders were abducted (arrested) by these same police. They endured terrible treatment for at least two days.
